Challenges in Poultry Farming: Broilers and Layers

Poultry farming, encompassing both broilers and layers, faces a myriad of challenges that can impact the overall health, productivity, and profitability of the farm. One of the primary concerns is nutrition. Ensuring a balanced and consistent intake of essential nutrients is vital for optimal growth in broilers and consistent egg production in layers. However, achieving this balance is often complicated by the presence of chemical feed additives, which, while boosting certain aspects of growth or production, can have long-term negative effects on the birds’ health.

Gut health is another significant concern.  Any compromise in gut function can lead to reduced growth rates in broilers and decreased egg production in layers. Digestive health, closely tied to liver function, is equally critical. A healthy digestive system ensures efficient nutrient absorption and utilization, directly influencing growth and productivity.

The use of antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs) presents another challenge. While AGPs can enhance growth, their overuse or misuse can lead to antibiotic resistance, posing a significant health risk. Wet litter is a persistent issue, especially in broiler farming. It can lead to a host of problems, including footpad dermatitis, increased ammonia levels, and a higher risk of disease transmission.

For layers, eggshell breakage is a significant concern. Weak or thin eggshells not only reduce the market value of the eggs but also increase the risk of contamination. Stress, whether due to environmental changes, disease outbreaks, or other factors, can severely impact both broilers and layers, leading to reduced growth, lower egg production, and increased susceptibility to diseases.
